"The dog is man's best friend". This popular saying makes perfect sense when analyzed in real life. Stories of love and faithfulness between dogs and their tutors are common throughout the world. Science cannot explain clearly this relationship between humans and canines. However, the pet’s owners know that this kind of love does not need explanation. The faithfulness of the dogs is proven in heroic stories reported in the news. Rex's story is one of these.

The hero dog history

Rex is a 2-year-old German shepherd who lives in Des Moines, the largest city of the American state of Iowa. On February 21 Rex and his owner Javier Mercado, a 16-year-old teenager, were home alone. It was around noon when Javier caught sight of an unknown car. Then they heard the glass door break causing a loud noise. At this moment, Rex ran downstairs and started barking.

Javier reported hearing a man saying 'the dog bit me, he bit me, get the dog'. At this time, he had the idea to call 911 and hide himself in the bathroom closet. Rex went back upstairs covered in blood. The intruders followed the dog and started searching all the rooms. When they got in the room where Javier was hiding, Rex without thinking twice attacked the burglars. That is when they shot Rex four times, hitting the dog's neck and leg. “My dog cries after each shot, it was the worst thing I’ve ever seen, added the kid.

When police finally arrived, the intruders had already disappeared. While police team looked for the suspects, Rex was taken to the animal’s hospital. Unfortunately, Rex was seriously injured, with bullet wounds that required surgery.

Javier's family did not have the money to pay Rex's medical bills, but the dog heroic story had already spread. It did not take long to get funding for the surgery. They hoped to raise around $10,000 to cover the expenses but they actually got over $40,000. The family says it will donate the rest to other injured pets who need care.

Now the neighbors are calling Rex as ‘The Hero Dog’. On February 23, the dog successfully passed for the first surgery and is now recovering for the next one. Let's hope this hero gets better as soon as possible.
